10 August 2003, Seremban GP 1/10th Touring Race, N.Sembilan
In conjunction with Malaysia Merdeka Day Celebration
Organised by : Speedtrax Racing Team
Class: 1/10th Nitro 200mm Touring Open Bodies

A track that many are looking forward to race at, Seremban 2 track located next to the Seremban 2
Sports Complex, were originally built by 1/5th Scalers Mr.Aw for their huge 1/5th scale cars.
The track is really big, wide and long enough to push everyones engines RPM to the redline!
Some parts of the track was re-painted and with the brighter white lines, makes thing a lot easier
to see and drive close to the apex most of the time.

The race organiser was very efficient by doing registration at the entrance to speed things up
and thus allowed the race to start as scheduled. If I am not mistaken, there were about
115 entries! Extra tentage was built near the entrance to the track to accomodate for the high
entries.

Before the race start, many drivers already found out that tire wear is very high though not a
problem for qualifying heats but many were worrying about the long final. The most unexpected
thing was the short run time from a full tank! Many drivers dumped their car even before the 5 min
heat was up, many ran out of fuel? Now that many already known tires durability was a problem.
The A-Main would have to race for 45min, B-Main 35min, C-Main
25min and D-Main 15min.
Well..how to race the long final without running out of tires?

As teh qualifying heat starts, no one seems to be able to cross 18 laps until Group I Steven Mong's

made 18 laps in 5'12.430. But his time was beaten by me (ha!ha!) being the last Group J, I manage
18 laps in 5'11'.830. Anthony Wee with his Trinity Reflex tried hard in Round 2 and was very close
in taking away the Top Qualifier from me, he made 18 laps in 5'11.910. As the day progress to the
hot and dry noon...no one could beat these time set earlier.

Now most drivers opt for one-stop tire change strategy. As for us NTC3 drivers, with the high rubber
& foam blend on the Speedmind 45shore, they are more durable and combine it with a smooth
rolling NTC3 car, we chose not to stop for tire change. But we are really worry since we do not have
experience in racing such condition. As the A-Main started, NTC3 drivers were racing at a very safe
pace ...allowing many cars to pass, by the 20 minutes mark...many cars came in for tire change and
this is where racing position changes a lot.
Now the thing I learned from this race was "when should
I charge hard to pull away, since I have taken over lead from Anthony Wee now". Since I have never
race in such situation before and with the lack of experience, I allowed Anthony Wee to pull a gap
earlier. Though after the tire change I manage to lead but then it is not far from Anthony closing in
on the 2nd. Then I suffered an engine cut during refuel in the pit and this allowed Anthony Wee to
regain the lead. It went on till the end of the race with Anthony Wee winning, me 2nd and a lucky
Lai Kok Heng 3rd.
Why lucky...haha..many were shouting 'heaven no eyes' (in Cantonese), 3rd and
4th was suppose to be Desmond Lam and Azri...but luck went out for Desmond, Azri took 3rd and
again...luck went away from Azri, all happened at the very last 5 minutes before the race over,
Kok Heng moved to the 3rd spot.

Well...whatever the story was...that's what racing is about. :)

Great race!
